In June of 2021\, President Joe Biden signed a bill to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. \nJoin us in honoring and remembering this important day in American history when the last group of enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom. This year marks the sixth year anniversary that Juneteenth will be celebrated in the Borough of State College.

DESCRIPTION:With guest speaker Jackie Bonomo.\nJackie Bonomo holds a B.S. in Environmental Studies: Human Ecology from Huxley College at Western Washington University. A self-proclaimed “Jack of all trades”\, Jackie’s work has centered around her passions for books\, the natural world\, and physical well-being. Her experience spans roles in sustainable agriculture\, forestry\, solar design\, and education\, as well as serving in various community-based environmental and wellness initiatives. Jackie brings a holistic and deeply informed perspective to the conversatino. \nJoin us for an evening of reflection and discussion as we explore climate racism– how systemic racism intersects with the climate crisis. We’ll begin with guiding questions and short video clips to help define the topic\, followed by a group discussion. The program will also include a global perspective on who produces and who suffers from carbon emissions\, a visual map of this imbalance\, and powerful footage from affected communities around the world and in Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION:With guest speaker Dr. Brian King. \nSee the flier here. \nDr. Brian King is Professor and Head of the Department of Geography at Penn State. His research\, teaching\, and outreach focus on livelihoods\, conservation and development\, environmental change\, and human health. He holds affiliations across the university\, including with the Population Research Institute\, the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute\, the School of International Affairs\, and the Consortium to Combat Substance Abuse. \nDr. King is also an honorary research associate with the African Climate and Development Initiative at the University of Cape Town and was selected as a National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellow in 2017. In addition\, he serves as the Nature and Society editor for The Annals of the American Association of Geographers. \nIn this talk\, Dr. King will examine how climate change is reshaping human health\, from heat exposure and food insecurity to extreme weather events\, with attention to uneven impacts and community resilience. \nThis program is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:We are excited to be joining forces with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra to open the 77th season of the State College Choral Society with the perennial favorite\, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Inspired by a collection of Medieval poetry from southern Germany\, Orff composed the music in 1935 in a style purposefully much simpler and more tonal than his contemporaries Schoenberg and Stravinsky.  The poetry’s focus on the fickleness of luck\, life in the tavern\, and the thrill of springtime and love\, are as relevant today as when they were written nearly one thousand years ago.  The iconic music of Carmina Burana remains a mainstay popular culture today\, as is heard in commercials and athletic events. \nVisit the State College Choral Society’s website to find links to tickets: scchoralsociety.org/this-season
