SUMMARY:Priestley Pilgrimage Picnic
DESCRIPTION:An exciting excursion to the Priestley house in PA! \n\nWe will need to bring chairs and tables\, food\, and drink\, and musical instruments. It takes about ~75 minutes to Northumberland by Route 80\, and a little longer on Route 45 or 192\, although they are more pleasant. \n\n\nPlan on leaving about 10:30 from State College\, set up picnic around noon. Have a brief speech\, and then impromptu music and poetry and whatever. We will eat and park by the chapel. The house/Laboratory site is a few blocks’ walk away. This is informal\, so you can come and go as suits your schedule\, but do plan to be there from 12-1:30 at least. \n\n\nWho was Joseph Priestley? \n\n\nWhy are we driving 75 minutes to Northumberland for a fun potluck picnic? And what has this to do with the 75 Anniversary Celebration? \n\n\nNorthumberland is where Joseph Priestley built a house\, a laboratory\, and a chapel after he was chased out of England. He is buried there. \n\nSo\, why was Joseph Priestley important to the founders? In many ways. You may know Priestley as the discoverer of oxygen (and of carbonated drinks) and as an educational reformer. However\, our founders recognized an inspirational figure sharing some of their experiences. \n\n\n Like them\, Priestley was a scientist and educator\, and very concerned with improving society. Like them\, Priestley was concerned with starting Unitarian communities. He co-founded the first Unitarian church in England and then came to the US and did it again in Philadelphia. Like Gerald Moser\, a founder who fled Nazi Germany\, Priestley was forced to leave his country because of his social and religious beliefs\, finding a safe place in Central Pennsylvania. \n\n\nPriestley’s beliefs influenced the founders of our country\, particularly founders Jefferson and Franklin. \n\n\nSo\, between 1952-1993\, our Fellowship founders made 19 “pilgrimages” to Northumberland and Priestley sites\, sometimes meeting other UU congregations there. One time they camped out. They had potluck picnics\, sang\, had a brief service\, visited the Priestley House\, and generally hung out together. \n\n\nThe Priestley house and laboratory are active historical sites\, with guided tours ($6-8/person) maintained in part by the American Chemical Association. It is located a few blocks from our main site. https://joseph-priestley-house.org/ \n\n\nThe Priestley Chapel will be our main site. It is also well maintained. We have rented it for the day\, so we have parking and a place for picnicking on the lot next door\, a place to sit and listen to whoever chooses to play or recite poetry\, and a bathroom (and additional porta potty). priestleychapel.org

Enjoy a wonderful night of fellowship for all ages! \nThe Seder begins at 6 PM. Arrive early to greet friends and get settled. The event includes a delicious potluck. SUMMARY:UUFCC Music Series: String Music for Spring
DESCRIPTION:Three local musicians will present “String Music for Spring” for the next event on our series.  The performers will be violinist Gregory Glessner\, violinist Hannah Lin-Glessner\, and violist John Roxburgh.  Their program will celebrate the rich repertoire for violin and viola with solos\, duos\, and trios that will feature the Handel-Halvorsen Passacaglia for violin and viola and Dvorak’s Terzetto for two violins and viola.\n\nGregory Glessner earned degrees in Violin Performance from Messiah College and Penn State.  He teaches violin and viola in Boalsburg\, plays in local orchestras\, and owns Homestead Strings\, a violin shop in State College.  Hannah Lin-Glessner also teaches violin in Boalsburg and has taught in college\, grade school\, and community music programs.  She received a MM degree in Suzuki Pedagogy from Ithaca College and a BME degree from Penn State.  John Roxburgh performs as principal viola in the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra and the Altoona Symphony Orchestra and also performs in several other orchestras.  He earned a MM degree in Viola Performance from Penn State and a DMA degree from Shenandoah University.\n\nWe hope you can join js for this program!  Suggested donation is $15; students attend free.

SUMMARY:After-Supper Talk: The Vital Role of US Foreign Assistance
DESCRIPTION:Join Christy Delafield\, a dedicated humanitarian with extensive experience working in disaster and conflict zones\, as she shares a personal account of the vital work done by USAID and other humanitarian organizations. She now faces the uncertainty of job loss due to attacks on U.S. foreign assistance programs. Christy has experience traveling in disaster-impacted locations like Yemen\, Syria\, South Sudan\, and in conflict zones such as Nigeria and Mosul. \nChristy will address the alarming consequences of recent funding cuts\, explaining how these reductions threaten not only global stability but also local economies in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania farmers\, scientists\, and vendors are directly impacted by the halt in foreign aid\, as many rely on USAID-funded programs to distribute crops and monitor diseases. With nonprofits struggling to stay afloat\, this funding crisis risks undoing over six decades of American investment and could lead to a global catastrophe with far-reaching consequences for America’s safety and international standing.
