SUMMARY:Community Event - "Climate Has Always Changed"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Alley will present his groundbreaking research on ice cores and Earth’s climate history\, offering insight into how scientists understand past climate change and what that history tells us about the present. By studying records preserved deep within glaciers\, Dr. Alley explains that while climate has always changed naturally\, those changes have had profound impacts on life on Earth. Comparing past shifts in carbon dioxide to today’s conditions shows that current climate change is overwhelmingly driven by human activity\, and scientific models accurately reflect the scale of the challenge we face. \nDr. Alley\, a Penn State professor since 1988\, is an internationally recognized climate scientist whose honors include election to the U.S. National Academy Presentation co-sponsored by the of Sciences\, The Royal Society\, and receipt of the U.S. National Medal of Science. He has contributed to the Nobel Peace Prize–winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\, hosted the PBS series Earth: The Operators’ Manual\, and authored award‑winning books that make climate science accessible to the public. \nThis program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Community Event - "Climate Racism"
DESCRIPTION:With guest speaker Jackie Bonomo.\nJackie Bonomo holds a B.S. in Environmental Studies: Human Ecology from Huxley College at Western Washington University. A self-proclaimed “Jack of all trades”\, Jackie’s work has centered around her passions for books\, the natural world\, and physical well-being. Her experience spans roles in sustainable agriculture\, forestry\, solar design\, and education\, as well as serving in various community-based environmental and wellness initiatives. Jackie brings a holistic and deeply informed perspective to the conversatino. \nJoin us for an evening of reflection and discussion as we explore climate racism– how systemic racism intersects with the climate crisis. We’ll begin with guiding questions and short video clips to help define the topic\, followed by a group discussion. The program will also include a global perspective on who produces and who suffers from carbon emissions\, a visual map of this imbalance\, and powerful footage from affected communities around the world and in Pennsylvania. We’ll close with time for questions\, reflections\, and silence. \nThis program is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Community Event - "Tipping Points and the Big Picture on Climate and Energy"
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Richard Alley\, an Evan Pugh University Professor in the Department of Geosciences and leader of the Penn State Ice and Climate Research Center\, will present a talk on Tuesday\, January 14 at 7 pm at Foxdale. The well-documented risk of climate change is the potential of crossing thresholds called tipping points\, which could trigger rapid\, irreversible changes. Dr. Alley will describe potential tipping points and discuss the benefits of transitioning to a sustainable energy system in avoiding these thresholds. This lecture is open to the public.

SUMMARY:Community Event - "Cooked\, Survival by Zip Code"
DESCRIPTION:Cooked\, Survival by Zip Code was produced by an award winning filmmaker named Judith Hefand.  It will be shown July 11th\, 7pm in the Foxdale Auditorium. The film is being co-sponsored by the Climate Justice Group of State College Friends Meeting\, and Foxdale’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion and Climate Care Committees.  State College community attendance is welcomed. \n\nCooked\, Survival by Zip Code documents various weather disasters but focuses on the 1995 Chicago heat disaster that killed 739 people. Most of those people were elderly\, impoverished and many were black. This film links extreme weather events with extreme disparity …  people without the means to escape or recover invariably suffer the most. The timing of this showing with our most recent national heat wave makes the film very relevant. Climate scientists predict increased strength and frequency of weather events and predict a “world of hurt” if we fail to address the cause – the hurt will not be equally distributed.
