SUMMARY:Community Event ~ CPAU Presents Documentary Screening: No Way Home
DESCRIPTION:Please note: you can attend this event either in person or virtually. \nJoin CPAU on April 19th at 7:00 pm at University Baptist & Brethren Church for the release of No Way Home\, a documentary depicting a mother’s poignant journey to reunite her family and end mandatory life without parole in Pennsylvania. Witness the story of Lorraine Haw\, affectionately known as Mrs. Dee Dee\, as she navigates the aftermath of gun violence in Philadelphia. From the loss of her brother to a fatal altercation over a gold necklace to her son’s heartbreaking sentence\, Mrs. Dee Dee’s narrative sheds light on the dual impact of gun violence and incarceration. \nWe will also highlight the case of a State College man\, Subramanyam (Subu) Vedam\, who was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1982 and sentenced to life without parole\, leading to decades of trauma for him and his family. Authorities offered no witnesses\, no motive\, no weapon\, or any other direct evidence tying him to the crime. Documents have recently surfaced showing that prosecutors knew Subu could not have committed the crime\, and concealed that evidence from his defense. The effort to ultimately free Subu is ongoing\, and the local community has an important part to play. \nThe night will conclude with a panel discussion. \nSign up here: https://www.mobilize.us/paunited/event/614973/

SUMMARY:Hot Topics: White Christian Nationalism
DESCRIPTION:For our December Hot Topics\, we are joining University Baptist and Brethren for a presentation on White Christian Nationalism featuring Dr. Esther Prins \nDr. Esther Prins\, White Christian Nationalism: What is it and how should Christians respond?  This presentation will explore what White Christian nationalism is—and what it is not. Learn how education is showing up in current events (particularly in education) and reflect on why Christians should care and how we can work to counteract this powerful religio-political movement. \nEsther Prins is a professor in the Lifelong Learning and Adult Education Program at Penn State. Her research focuses on adult education (particularly adult and family literacy) and\, more broadly\, the intersection of (adult) education and social justice. With co-authors Mary Juzwik and Kevin Burke\, she recently published an article on White Christian nationalism and educational research (attached). She and Mary are writing a new article on White Christian nationalism and the local SCASD school board election. Esther grew up in the Christian Reformed Church and graduated from Wheaton College (BA\, Sociology) and Cornell University (Ph.D.\, Adult Education). She and her family (Leland Glenna\, Rural Sociology professor\, and Lily\, a 9th grader at Delta High) attend University Mennonite Church. \nDr. Prins would like us to take the survey at this link by Thursday\, December 7th – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfa4ZSyYR623x-LrB4JWT9OLJVT41sWm-DodMv2uABHG7vovg/viewform \n\n  \nThis offering will be in person and on Zoom. \nInstructions for UBBC Zoom Worship & Adult Forum: \nBy computer or wifi device \n(no passcode needed) \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84996246803?pwd=SGpRUTh4L1FvU0NaMVpHaVJleFcxZz09 \n\nJoin us for a presentation on the “hot topics” of today!
