More event information coming soon. Juneteenth is a celebration to commemorate the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people. In June of 2021, President Joe Biden signed a bill to recognize Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Join us in honoring and remembering this important day in American history when the last group of enslaved African Americans were notified of their freedom. This year marks the sixth year anniversary that Juneteenth will be celebrated in the Borough of State College.
With guest speaker Jackie Bonomo. Jackie Bonomo holds a B.S. in Environmental Studies: Human Ecology from Huxley College at Western Washington University. A self-proclaimed "Jack of all trades", Jackie's work has centered around her passions for books, the natural world, and physical well-being. Her experience spans roles in sustainable agriculture, forestry, solar design, and education, as well as serving in various community-based environmental and wellness initiatives. Jackie brings a holistic and deeply informed perspective to the conversatino. Join us for a blacksmith demonstration where participants can assist in transforming a gun into a garden tool. Several local organizations will be tabling. This is a family friendly downtown event with art, music, and engaging ways to create peace. Location: Parking lot behind St Paul's United Methodist Church & Abba Java Coffee House.
The public is invited to a Panel Discussion about the importance of outdoor recreation for people incarcerated at our county jail. Panelists include formerly incarcerated individuals Lee Powers, Kerry Cavenaugh and Irvin Moore, Cindy Carpenter who will speak on the importance of sunlight to our well-being, and Mark Kissling who will provide background on the campaign since it began three years ago.
Join Fair Districts PA, Central Pennsylvania United and the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County for: A pot luck dinner A short presentation on fair redistricting with Fair Districts PA Chair Carol Kuniholm Time for networking across organizations. Bring some food and some information to share! Feel free to bring a friend. Representatives from other organizations are welcome to promote, attend, bring information to share, and make announcements as part of our networking time. Democracy works best when we all are heard. This is a collaborative event.
The meeting will begin with an ice cream social so that the 30 people, or so from the 28 congregations can socialize, at 6 pm. If any of you are interested in learning about or serving on this very interesting and vital board, certainly come to this party to meet everyone. The meeting will begin at 7 pm, usually for an hour, and Rev. Tracy will be doing the opening.
