Community Event – Juneteenth Celebration Weekend, State College

Get ready for Juneteenth Weekend 2024! Juneteenth is a celebration to commemorate the day federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people. In June of 2021, Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday. Juneteenth Weekend is founded by the State College NAACP in partnership with the Borough of State College, the Center for the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State, and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. Subu Vedam Case Information Session

Come to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Centre County on June 16 at 11:30 a.m. for a Subu Vedam Community Awareness program. Subramanyam (Subu) Vedam, a State College man, was wrongfully convicted of murder in 1982 and sentenced to life without parole, leading to decades of trauma for him and his family. Documents have recently surfaced showing that Subu could not have committed the crime, and that prosecutors concealed this evidence from his defense. Community Event – “Cooked, Survival by Zip Code”

Cooked, Survival by Zip Code was produced by an award winning filmmaker named Judith Hefand.  It will be shown July 11th, 7pm in the Foxdale Auditorium. The film is being co-sponsored by the Climate Justice Group of State College Friends Meeting, and Foxdale’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion and Climate Care Committees.  State College community attendance is welcomed. Cooked, Survival by Zip Code documents various weather disasters but focuses on the 1995 Chicago heat disaster that killed 739 people. Community Event – “Global Warming 101”

Foxdale Auditorium 500 E Marylyn Ave, State College, United States

Public presentation on September 24 at 7 p.m. in the Foxdale Auditorium. The speaker is Dr. Raymond Najjar Professor of Oceanography in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, with a joint appointment in the Department of Geosciences. Come to learn the fundamentals of Earth’s changing climate, including the evidence for warming, the contributions of humans, the impacts on society and the natural world, and how our actions now will determine the severity of the threat for future generations. This event is open to the public.

Community Event – Indigenous Peoples Resistance Day Rally

On Old Main Patio FREE Indigenous student, faculty, and staff leaders will speak, and artists will perform in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Resistance. The Jake George Family will perform a smoke dance to welcome guests. Supaman will perform at approximately 1 p.m. Presented by the Center for the Performing Arts in collaboration with Penn State Indigenous Faculty and Staff Alliance, Indigenous Peoples’ Student Association, and Student Affairs.

Community Event – “UUJusticePA, Zoom Pastoral Space”

With new Artistic Director, Eric Clayton. Featuring members of the Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra and Madeleine Christopher, mezzo soprano. Concert pieces include: Singet Dem Herrn by Johann Pachelbel, Fern Hill by John Corigliano, Five Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre, Dixit Dominus by Frideric Handel, The Ground by Ola Gjeilo, and a commissioned work - Be Still My Soul, by Sheridan Seyfried.
