This morning we explore Hanukkah, Christmas, and other traditions and talk about expectations of the holidays, ourselves, the world.
Life comes with struggles and sadness, ups and downs. The state of the world - war, democracy, poverty, climate change, etc - all add to the strain of daily living, causing more people to feel fragile and vulnerable. We talk seasonal blues, today, and making our way through the tough times. This is a Blue Sunday service.
With Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt Unitarian Universalism has been pluralist for generations, and wisdom from other traditions is one of our named sources of faith. But putting these values into practice isn't always easy or straightforward. Join us this week as we consider our faith's approach to pluralism, and how we strive to relate to other faiths with humility and respect.
Join us for our annual Intergenerational Thanksgiving service - the re-telling of the Stone Soup story with our focus on embracing community, including those whom we don't yet know and those with whom we don't necessarily get along, from a sense of abundance, love, and deep kindness. NOTE: This is NOT a hybrid service. It will be in-person in the Fellowship Hall.
A service of gratitude for where you have been, who you are now, and where you might be headed. This service will end at 10:45 for the chili cook-off and the mid-year meeting.
We come together to celebrate and honor the wheel of the year, the turning of the earth and thus the changing of the seasons. It is a service in which we honor and celebrate our deep connection to the earth and all her living creatures. This service will be outside next to the fire pit. Dress warmly. Dr. Jason Whitney will be presenting on Opioids, Addiction and Recovery. His session will examine the opioid overdose epidemic as part of a larger substance use disorder epidemic. He will describe the current status of opioid addiction, review the status of addiction as a chronic disease, and discuss various systems of treatment and recovery pathways. Dr. Whitney is an Associate Teaching Professor in the College of Education and Program Director of the Penn State Collegiate Recovery Community, a program of Student Affairs that supports students in recovery from addictions that he helped found in 2011. Vote on important matters such as changes to the bylaws, 1st Sunday Plate charities, and the winner for the Chili Cookoff!
Please sign-up to share your chili recipes and to help us make this year the best Chili Cookoff Year EVER!! Please bring your Crockpots full of delicious Meat or Vegetarian Chili to be plugged in and ready to feed lots of hungry UUs after the service and before the Midyear Meeting on November 5th. Please also sign up to help with set up and clean up, and to bring sides. The Chili Winners will be announced at the Mid-Year Meeting, and there will be prizes for the Best Vegetarian and the Best Meat Chilis.
Come to the Valentine's Dance with live music by the UUFCC Jazz Band. 16-piece band plays Swing, Rock, Latin, Funk - Very Danceable! All ages welcome. Bring your friends, your family, and your dancing shoes! Admission is FREE with a donation of nonperishable food or cash to the Food Bank. Light refreshments will be provided.
